What are signs of opioid overdose?

Symptoms of an opioid overdose may include shallow breathing, confusion, lessened alertness, and loss of consciousness. People who have overdosed often experience respiratory failure, slow breathing, small pupils, unresponsiveness, or blue skin from poor circulation. Since these symptoms may also be present in people experiencing other medical emergencies, the rescuer should rely on the patient, bystanders, or the scene itself for clues. Look for containers, pill bottles, drug paraphernalia, etc.
