00:00:02,078 --> 00:00:08,079
Now let's cover a child who may be choking. We've approached the child and say, "Maria are you choking?"
00:00:08,079 --> 00:00:18,048
She nods yes. So I say "it's ok, I can help you." I get down to her level, find her belly button, take the thumb, tuck it in and put it right against the tummy.
00:00:18,048 --> 00:00:27,029
Grab that and go inward and upward as many times as it takes until she falls unconcious or it comes out.
00:00:27,029 --> 00:00:32,005
As soon as I knew she was choking, I'm going to tell someone to call 911 or I'm going to do it myself
00:00:32,005 --> 00:00:34,061
because we have a potential emergency here.
00:00:34,061 --> 00:00:39,090
If she goes unconscious, I'm going to lower her to the ground. If it comes out, then we're going to go
00:00:39,090 --> 00:00:44,086
ahead and comfort her and maybe even keep the ambulance on the way so that they can take breath sounds
00:00:44,086 --> 00:00:46,085
and make sure all of it is out.
00:00:48,096 --> 00:00:55,055
Maria, are you choking? I can help you. Lift up your elbows.
00:00:55,055 --> 00:01:01,065
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
00:01:01,065 --> 00:01:03,001
00:01:03,001 --> 00:01:07,056
Oh good, did it come out? Oh good, does it seem like it came out?
00:01:07,056 --> 00:01:10,095
It's okay, you're doing great. You'll be okay.
Conscious Child Choking Training Summary:
If a child is choking and conscious, signs include looking panicked, blue color around the lips, and the inability to talk, cough, or breathe. The child may do the universal choking sign with hands around their throat. Ask if the child needs help. Get to the level of the child by kneeling or sitting, and raise their elbows. Place one hand with thumb tucked in against the abdomen, above the bellybutton, and grab your fist with the other hand. Perform abdominal thrusts until the object is clear or the child become unconscious.
